Q. Why isn't the library open on Sunday (or later in the evening)?

The entire MCTC campus is closed Sundays, and opening just the library on Sundays would require not only at least one library technician and student workers, but also at least one security officer. Sunday library hours have been explored in the past, but the administration decided against opening the library on Sundays due to the extra staffing and building operation costs. The library is currently open from 8:00 a.m. – 9:45 p.m. Monday – Thursday and the campus closes at 10:00 p.m. So even if the library had the staff to increase evening hours, the college would need to also increase the hours that it remains open and provide security.

If you check the other 2-year metro Minnesota State campus libraries, you will see that most close by or before 9 p.m. Mon. – Thur. and are open 9 – 4 on Saturdays and are closed Sundays. This is due to both staffing levels and the fact that we are commuter 2-year colleges. Academic libraries that are open until midnight, or 24 hours, are all residential university campuses.
